Kurtosis is a measure of how outlier-prone a distribution is.

Measure of whether the data are peaked or flat relative to a normal
distribution. With high kurtosis, distinct peaks and rapid decline with heavy
tails. Kurtosis for normal distribution is 3. Many statistical tests depend on normality. IF high skewness or kurtosis, then transform the data to make it normal. Eg. Box-Cox transformations.
OR use techniques based on distributions other than normal. Eg. exponential
