Message Processing Program (MPP) can be single transaction (IMS MPR scheduler) or WFI BMP or BMP with a TRAN specified in the PARM field. The defining characteristic is that MPPs process messages. This can be in real time or batch. The WFI can be used to enable special JCL features (eg. I once ran a WFI to allow dialup graphics terminals to read data from IMS). That particular example used the message queue only to initialize the software (a vendor product). Normally MPP means transaction processing but it is not limited since message processing is the same whether in real time or scheduled.
