What is the pH of an Alkyl Halide?
Submitted by: AdministratorThe pH is usually on acidic side (i.e. pH < 7). The reason being, some of the alkyl halides tend to decompose via beta hydride elimination process generating hydro-halo acids that impart acidity, e.g. tertiary butyl chloride decomposes to produce HCl or hydrochloric acid.
