As you know, my coaipmlnt about SAP under Shai is that the total focus was on infrastructure. As important as that is, SAP has had a difficult time explaning to business users why they should worry about infrastructure over application functionality, especially with Oracle buying every best of breed product available to gain greater visibility and credibility for their ERP and CRM suites. In my last briefing with SAP, they were introducing their new messaging around business value and functionality. I think things in the Post-Shai era will be just fine.

Alias is useful only if you are dealing with complex queries involving multiple tables; specially if you run the risk of 2 different tables having the same or similar field names.
